"We're staying overnight" (a retrospective) - Mihai Iepure Gorski31 May 2007 - 26 June 2007 "I have never seen an artist whose debut with a commercial gallery to be more enthusiastic than the one of Mihai Iepure Gorski at Andreiana Mihail Gallery, titled We're staying overnight (a retrospective). A trace of satisfied vanity (at last) passes through every artist at his debut. Not through Mihai though, who, far from invoking artistic maturity and abilities, celebrates his own debut and his condition of young artist in this show. If, usually, the theme of every such exhibition is placed outside the idea of "beginning" - which is taken for granted and considered devoid of critical interest - Mihai Iepure Gorski turns his analytic eye towards the act of his very own debut: I can't wait. I just can't wait. I'm so glad to be around... (John Lennon, Man of the Decade interview, British Television broadcast on ATV in December 1969) says the artist quoting John Lennon, at the moment of the only photograph in the exhibition. And, even if Mihai has personally told me this, when seeing the photograph I see in it the meaning of Lennon's words feeding a joy so candid it seems fake. But the text scribbled on the walls of the gallery cancels suspicion, and Bruce Nauman becomes a useful category for a corrosive comment on the mechanisms of the gallery - artist relationship, and the driving concept of the exhibition passes even through the scene smelling of suicide in the Untitled video. The attraction towards the void, bending over the edge, almost a perversion, is the cypher of the anguish typical for the artist - art industry binomen, as well as A boy with matches, the most sensitive and cryptic work from We're staying overnight (a retrospective) is conceptually reducible to the very title of the exhibition. A novell concept, with a permeable implementation and a witty artistic strategy - this is what Andreiana Mihail Gallery offers you in Mihai Iepure Gorski's show."Text: Cosmin Moldovan Location:
