BRIDGE:ING / The "Czernowitz Austria" -
symbols and identities in a new Europe

The replica of the in 2003 rediscovered "Czernowitz Austria" sculpture is the starting point for this international art and culture project about political symbols and new identities in Europe.

What means "to belong" and "identity"? Can identity be decreed by symbol? How is identity constructed? Which symbols do have a future?
These questions - highly charged in light of the debates surrounding "European identity" - are the core concern of the international art and cultural project.
The replica of the in 2003 rediscovered "Czernowitz Austria" sculpture is the basis and starting point for an artistically and scientific examination about political symbols and European identities. The project started in January 2005 and runs with international exhibitions and events (including extensive side program) till 2008 in major cities in the five engaged countries: Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Krakow, Lviv, Chernivtsi, Kiew,…
Using the actual example of the "Czernowitz Austria" the history and effective power of old and new European cultural icons and symbols are being investigated
in this international project. 10 internationally reputed artists from Austria, Poland, the Slovak Republic, Hungary and the Ukraine interpret one replica of
the sculpture - the project is being curated by Boris Ondrejicka, Jiri Sevcik, Lucas Gehrmann and Anna Maria Potocka.
The works deliver interpretations concerning the attitudes towards, as well as the handling of political symbols and identities in Europe. The new works of art
will be given to the Republic of Ukraine during the project concluding event as a symbolic gesture.
In scientific works as well as in the final international symposium titled "History and Symbolism: About the handling of political symbols and their relevance for
the present and future of Europe" the core questions shall be considered. Scientists and artists from all over Europe will concern themselves with these questions in Czernowitz in May 2007 and to what extent these are relevant for the present and future of the new Europe. The results of the symposium, further texts by historians and theoreticians as well as research produced during the project will be published in the second wave
of publications.
All this will result not only in an extensive spacial installation - The entire project is being documented in video and still photography and 2 book publications will be dealing with the core issues in detail.
