Vienna Children´s University

At Vienna Children’s University more than 3,600 children are turning the university upside down.

Science demands curiosity and asking a lot of questions. Children have many questions and they are curious. Therefore it makes sense to link children’s and scientific curiosity together. Within the framework of Vienna Children’s University, which has been organised by the Vienna University Children’s Office since 2003, children and science are in the spotlight of public attention for two weeks.

At Vienna Children’s University almost everything is like the real thing, except that the students are slightly younger, namely between 7 and 12 years old. Like at a real university, various subjects are being offered at Vienna Children’s University – there are 31 different disciplines, such as literature, chemistry, architecture or medicine. However, children are lucky because they do not have to choose one special field. The young “students” may take different tuitions from various special fields. They get student ID’s, records of studies and finally, they celebrate their “graduation”. Unlike “real” students they do not take exams – what’s most important is to ask questions.
More than 3,600 children took part at Vienna Children’s University 2006.

One focus in 2006 was internationality and multilingualism. People with different mother-tongues and of different origins were involved.
Folders have been produced in 15 different languages (Slovak, Turkish, Arabic, etc.) and distributed among the respective target groups. In order to loose inhibitions, the first contact was made in the respective mother-tongue, so that even those who otherwise only have little access to university were informed about the cost-free offer of Vienna Children’s University.

Supported by Erste Bank, a workshop in Czech and a bilingual course in Slovak and German were lectured. Even scientists from international universities (e.g. Comenius University Bratislava) have given lectures at Vienna Children’s University in 2006.
Therefore, in 2006 Vienna Children’s University was the most colourful and multifaceted in its history!

From July 7 -21, 2007 Vienna Children’s University takes place for the fifth time at four different locations (Vienna University, Vienna Medical University, Vienna University of Technology and Vienna University of Applied Arts), and again more than 3,600 children will take part.

This year, Vienna Children’s University will, for the first time, feature a cultural exchange stand: Specific days will be dedicated to each of our neighbouring countries Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Croatia and Serbia. Children will have the chance to discover languages and cultures and, among other things, attend introductory language courses held by native speakers. The cultural exchange stand is supported by Erste Bank within the scope of “Kontakt. The program for art and civil society of Erste Bank Group“.
