ROHSTOFF (Raw Materials)

A filmhistoric research on the „small form“

Film history has some center´s and a lot of margins. A film writes history, similar to a stone, which is thrown into the water. The surface of the water mooves, the stone sinks to the depth of rememberance. That´s how we normally understand the development; kind of following the rules of physiks; or these of writing film history. With the series ROHSTOFF (raw materials) we propose to turn these rules upside down, sometimes negotiating them. The programme consists of five parts; which take place between 2004 and 2006. They plead for an open dialogue between different formats, like short (fiction) film, Super8, advertising, music videos, art videos/films and educational films. We are looking for the „small forms“ of mostly well kown directors, like as if they didn´t allready made there „big works“ and combinig them with an current work. So the result is a new perspective, a view to the backside, under or beneath. We are looking on film history as a phenomenon of different layers.

Publication: Alongside this film-special we are also preparing three Fanzines, trying to provide some additional information on the films and filmmakers we want to present; trying to open up & deepen the questions connected with the project and the film-special as they are mentioned above. Specially the production of new texts, to singular films, where no written reviews exists, is – besides the interviews – one focus of the magazin. To follow the open media appoach, we´ll have in the film series, we invite one photographe for each fanzine to realize one photo-series. It is very important for us, to combine and present current visual and discorsive tendencies with historical one´s. These publications are also collections of diverse materials, which should be provided to the audience.

Start of the series: December 9th and 10th 2004 in the Austrian Filmmuseum
