Tranzit

Tranzit is a long-term initiative in the field of contemporary art and theory founded by Erste Bank Vienna. Tranzit focuses on the region of Central and Eastern Europe, and operates mainly in the Czech and Slovak Republic, Hungary and Austria.

The idea of Tranzit has emerged out of a need to accommodate the complex situation of socio-political transition in contemporary Europe. Although more than a decade passed since the fall of the Wall, one can trace disillusion and distrust towards future perspectives in both newly established, as well as western democracies. Tranzit generates opportunities for artists, curators and theorists to work out creative strategies for new developments in arts and society.

As a starting point Tranzit attempts to build structures for communication across national borders, generations and disciplines. Instead of institutions, Tranzit stands for supporting individuals, as well as small-scale undertakings with potential to significantly contribute to local and international contexts. Tranzit hopes to become an initial impetus for creating a new type of mental space within the everyday that would make the presence, and its progression towards the future accessible.

Tranzit (conceived by Mária Hlavajová and Kathrin Rhomberg) is a flexible initiative based on our firm believes that ongoing transformations in contemporary society and art need response in a form of strong visions.
